Divi Aruba Phoenix Review: A Great Hideaway on Palm Beach

 In Our Travel Experience

We’re just back from an exhilarating week in Aruba for the 2014 Soul Beach Music Festival. Lucky for us, we chose to stay at the Divi Aruba Phoenix. There, the people, the facilities and the amenities make it easy to kick back and unwind after a long day of partying (or shopping, or touring the sights, or doing nothing at all).

The Divi Aruba Phoenix sits on a secluded end of Palm Beach set slightly apart from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the high-rise hotel strip yet still within easy reach of the area’s restaurants and shopping.

Check in is at a breezy, open-air lobby adorned with billowing white curtains and a soothing, wall-high water fountain. Charismatic, young staff welcome you to the Divi Aruba Phoenix (Bon Bini!) and ask if this is your first visit to Aruba before orienting you to the resort and handing over a set of keys and towel cards.

From there, a walk through tiled corridors fitted with slatted windows allows more of that world-famous Aruban breeze to soothe you on your way to your temporary, new home. Guest rooms are in one of three buildings but all face the glorious, palm-tree studded pool and/or the breathtaking turquoise ocean.

For our stay, we booked a one bedroom suite. It was a dreamy, self-contained apartment on the second floor dressed in shades of blue pulled from the ocean and filled with comfy furniture, modern appliances and a washer and dryer. A balcony off the living room was the perfect spot to drink morning coffee or sip champagne while listening to musicians performing from below in the evening. Leaving this place behind each day for Soul Beach festivities turned out to be quite a struggle.

On the resort grounds, relax by the pool, on a beach lounger or on a hammock. If you care to burn off more energy than is required to slather on sun screen, exercise in the light-filled gym, take in a game on the squash courts, play beach volleyball in the pool, or do like most and take a brisk walk on the meandering path between the resort and the ocean first thing in the morning.

After the sun sets, the Divi Aruba Phoenix transforms into a romantic setting illuminated in jewel-toned lights and perfect for an evening cocktail or meal.

Like many establishments on this happy island, dining and entertainment go hand in hand at the Divi Aruba Phoenix. In fact, the resort has some sort of entertainment scheduled almost every night. At Pure Beach, the resort’s popular, al fresco dining spot and beach bar, grilled bar foods with an island twist are served to the beat of bouncy radio tunes by day and live music by night. We especially loved karaoke on Wednesdays and the funky Joyride Band on Sundays. And we found that the best seats in the house were nowhere other than the swim up bar where happy hour drink prices applied from 4 – 6 pm each and every day.

A second and more upscale option is the newly renovated Pure Ocean – a modern, Caribbean, open-air venue covered by a high, thatched roof. By day, it offers a bright and cheery breakfast buffet with a killer view of the ocean. By night, it becomes a sexy dinner venue straight out of a magazine. Electric blue lights wash over the covered area and twinkling rope lights illuminate tables set in the sand. Sultry and modern lounge music plays from overhead, creating the perfect mood.

Whether you choose it as a refuge to recharge after a busy day around Aruba or as a fun yet tranquil getaway to spend most of your time, it’s obvious that the Divi Aruba Phoenix is a great option for your stay in Aruba. There’s no way we could have survived our week of high-octane fun at Soul Beach Music Fest without retreating to this secluded haven by the ocean for rest and relaxation. Thanks, Divi Aruba Phoenix!
