Trek Tips: Anguilla Travel Tips

If you are planning a visit to this tranquil, beach-lover’s paradise and haven for gourmands, consider these tips:
I didn’t notice this picture when we first arrived. Seeing it on our way out was such a tease.
*Make a point of visiting as many of its gorgeous beaches as possible. Each has its own unique personality. For example, Shoal Bay East is active with lively beach bars while Mead’s Bay (our favorite) is more laid back but still offers great restaurants and water sports.

*Sample restaurants to your heart’s content. We enjoyed delicious meals at the Viceroy (Sunday brunch buffet), Blanchard’s Beach Shack, Straw Hat, Da’Vida, Smokey’s at the Cove, the Pumphouse, Roy’s Bayside Grill, Madeariman’s, the SandBar and Veya. If your budget gets tight, consider dining at the more expensive restaurants during lunchtime. Often, the same exquisite entrees served at dinner are offered as smaller lunch portions for a cheaper price. And for goodness sake, make dinner reservations – everyone else will!

*Be sure to try some Ting! Its light, refreshing, grapefruit flavor is like bubbly sunshine in a bottle.

*Driving in Anguilla is not as scary as you may think. Simply remember left is right and right is wrong. And, pay attention to your right hand side when turning. Although driving on the left hand side may seem daunting, the roads are pretty easy to navigate, the island is relatively flat, there aren’t many stop lights and the pace is comfortable enough for a first timer. Just be sure to watch out for pedestrians and goats!
*If you take a cab to dinner or any other late night destination, be sure to pre-arrange a pick up back to your hotel. We learned the hard way that taxis are just plain hard to come by at night in Anguilla.
*Explore your inner chef. Learn to prepare some of the dishes you enjoyed on the island. As a participant in the Cuisinart’s cooking class, you’ll get plenty of tips on using local products in your own dishes at home and can swap restaurant recommendations when you sit down to eat with your classmates.

*Fly in and out of St. Martin then take the ferry over to Anguilla. On your way back home, allot some time for a stop at the Sunset Beach Bar (right next to St. Martin’s airport) where you can feast on tasty beach fare, sip refreshing cocktails and watch the jumbo jets land right over your head.

And if you want to add a little SOUL to your trip:
*Stay somewhere locally owned. La Vue’s owners will charm you and make you feel at home with their Anguillan hospitality.
*Try some local cuisine. Jazzy’s serves mouth-watering local dishes at a fun road-side location on the main road. Oliver’s, Gwen’s Reggae Bar and Grill, E’s Oven, Tasty’s and Palm Grove Bar and Grill are other excellent choices for a taste of Anguilla.
* Become a groupie! Reggea mon! The local music scene offers entertainment most nights of the week. If there isn’t something going on at your resort, check the schedule at Smokey’s at the Cove, Dune Preserve or the Pumphouse. There are also two local music events that draw music lovers from around the world – Moonsplash in March and the Tranquility Jazz Festival in November.
*Make an afternoon of following the Anguilla Heritage Trail. You’ll gain valuable information on the island’s rich history plus get a chance to visit areas of the island you may have otherwise missed.
